Das 20. Jhd. war sehr schwer für Letland. Lettland war das Schlachtfeld sowohl des 1. Weltkrieges, als auch des 2. Weltkrieges, und das gesamte Territorium hatte gelitten. Die schweren Stiefel der reussischen und deutschen Soldaten überschritten beide Male das Land. Die beiden Grossmächte zweifelten kaum, dass sie das Recht auf das kleine Land hatten und bestzten es. Sie besetzten Lettland, russifizierten und verdeutschten die Letten, damit sie ihnen gleich wären. Die Letten, die dem wiederstanden, die nicht reussifiziert oder verdeutscht sein wollten, wurden erschossen oder in Konzentrationslager eingesperrt. In den besetzten Länder war keine Freisinnigkeit. Die karminrot-weiss-karminrote Fahne Lettlands und die Hymne wurden sowohl während der russichen, als auch der deutschen Besatzung verboten. Die Letten verloren nie den Glauben an die Freiheit, obwohl verschiedene Armeen Lettland besetzten, und die Sicherheitsdienste jeden freien Gedanken bekämpften. Die Letten kämpften oft mit Gewehr oder sie kämpften mit den Methoden der Andersdenkenden (Dissidenten), aber sie leisteten auch den gewaltlosen Wiederstand. Sie sangen ihre Lieder und erzählten Witze über die Unterdrücker.
